Top 5 Buzzwords that make me NOT want to read a book
Why was this top 5 easier to come up with than the top 5 that make me WANT to read a book? What does that say about me as a reader? Am I hard to please? Is it too much to ask that every single book in the world be catered to my likes and dislikes on any given week? Ah, well. Here’s my list:
Despite a life-long love of ‘The World’s Greatest Detective’ a.k.a. Batman, this is the top word that will make me drop a book. There isn’t another word in the English language that destroys my interest any faster. If the first word of a synopsis is detective, I’ll never see the second. I know it’s one of the most popular genres of all time. I’ve read a few. Hell, I even tried to write one once. The market just seems saturated with it. When half of the Main Characters on the book shelves are Detectives, it just seems like there’s too much. No? Maybe I need to investigate more.
I’m okay with a romance playing out in the course of a story. Someimes, I even really enjoy it. But it can’t be the focus of the book for me. Fall in love while defusing bombs, or fighting an invading species of aliens, or learning magic spells and we’ll be just fine. But fall in love while falling in love and I’ll be saying those three little words: did not finish.
I’m not completely against it, but generally speaking, it’s an era that I haven’t enjoyed in books so far. I’m willing to admit, that’s probably just because I haven’t read the right books from this era, but I’m not sure what the right books are.
I don’t even know anyone who reads erotica or erotic stories. I mean, yeah, I know a very few people who tried 50 Shades of Grey during that whole craze, but that’s as close as it gets. Considering there are books within the genre that feature women getting it on with are different kinds of dinosaurs, I don’t think I’m missing out on much.
Killing and murder seems better fit as a means to an end, not the entire plot of the book. This can be done well, I’m sure. It’s probably a similar situation to Victorian in that I just haven’t found the right books on the subject. It’s probably also closely related to Detective novels, since they’re usually trying to find a killer.
